What a difference a year makes. Last time New Times spoke with Danay Suarez, in early 2017, it was on the eve of the release of her album Palabras Manuales. Suarez spoke with conviction about its importance and her belief that it would eventually reach its intended audience, but she sounded unsure about how that would happen with limited means for promotion.

At my first DECLASSIFIED: BEN FOLDS PRESENTS concert last June 30, Danay Suarez, an up-and-coming Cuban artist, blew everyone’s tiny minds in three songs with the NSO. Then she returned to Havana to find out that her debut album received FOUR Latin Grammy Nominations.

These DECLASSIFIED: BEN FOLDS PRESENTS shows are like bringing friends over to my house to have a beer and play records. In this case, though, my house happens to be the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall, and the stereo is our nation’s symphony orchestra. What really made the evening, though, was the Cuban singer Danay Suárez, a powerhouse of a musician who offers a kind of mash-up of rap and R&B, pouring out lyrics in a breathless stream of sound and thought. With her three songs, “Yo Aprendí,” “Lágrimas de Soledad” and “Wake Up,” she effectively stole a show that was decent to begin with, and came back onstage to adorn the piano concerto with some vocal cadenzas, adding fireworks to the finale.

Nina Simone said it best: “An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times.” Latino musicians and rappers, ones like Residente and Immortal Technique, have long used their music as vehicle for political resistance, to narrate the immigrant experience, and as a call for the liberation of one’s people.

The latter emerges a theme worth celebrating today, as Puerto Rico’s longest-held political prisoner, Oscar López Rivera, was officially set free—from house arrest, after spending 36 years in U.S. custody.

From stark protest cries against police brutality, to anthems of endurance in the face of change or social upheaval, here are 11 not-so-traditional songs worth blasting as we march on…

Danay Suárez busca traer 'valores morales que son necesarios en la sociedad y en la música'

La rapera cubana contó a U-LAB sobre su colaboración con Stephen Marley y de su nuevo disco, 'Palabras manuales'.

Danay Suárez estuvo charlando con U-LAB desde Miami en un Facebook Live en el que contó en qué anda por estos días. Destacó su nuevo trabajo, Palabras manuales, con el que busca proponer 'principios, valores morales que son necesarios en la sociedad y en la música'.

La rapera cubana contó también sobre su colaboración con Stephen Marley en su nuevo álbum, con el que trabajó en dos de las canciones: 'En los ojos de Dios' e 'Integridad'. El hijo de Bob Marley y figura mundial del reggae participó en Palabras manuales produciendo y tocando guitarra en la primera, y trabajando a dúo con Danay en la segunda.

'Integridad' es una canción bastante espiritual, y está basada en libros bíblicos, en este caso el libro de David, en el salmo 101', dijo Danay. Sobre su colaboración con Stephen Marley dijo: 'su disco y el mío tienen un sonido bastante similar. (..) Tuvimos otro lenguaje con el que conectamos, y tuvimos que hablar poco'.

Además, Suárez se encuentra trabajando en alianza con el Nu Deco Ensemble, una orquesta de música clásica enfocada en ampliar el género hacia otras perspectivas, y con el que Danay se presentó en concierto en Brickell.

Aparte, Danay contó que un trueque de último momento en su interpretación de 'Yo aprendí' por 'Dejando al mundo' le valió el histórico premio a la Inspiración en el Festival de Viña del Mar, Chile, entregado por primera vez en 58 años.

La Havana, Cuba (3 de Marzo, 2017) – La cantautora cubana Danay Suárez está de regreso con un nuevo disco, el segundo de su carrera, 'Palabras Manuales' que ya esta disponible a nivel mundial, bajo el sello Travis scott nexus expansion. Universal Music Group.

Palabras Manuales es un álbum que posiblemente requiera ser escuchado varias veces si lo que uno quiere es descubrir todas las intenciones que laten en él. Su proceso creativo se encaminó a dar forma a aquello que yo hubiera querido comprar en un disco de un artista. Disfruté mucho al tejer las palabras entre la melodía, al cincelar el significado de cada letra, al cuadrar las rimas y los pasajes en reverso o al dar forma a aquellos momentos en que canto lírico. Conforma un verdadero abanico de géneros, pero se nota que es una obra unitaria, y no pretende abarcarlo todo. El 95 % del álbum se grabó en estudio, detalle a detalle, en analógico. Hasta los delays fueron hechos con cinta, y no con un software.

Estoy muy satisfecha con las colaboraciones del álbum. Las escogí específicamente para este disco y fueron posibles gracias a su apoyo y disposición: todos creyeron en el proyecto. Por primera vez Stephen Marley canta en español, y yo rapeo a la velocidad de El B de Los Aldeanosen una pista de Hip-Hop producida por Roberto Fonseca. Me encanta cómo mezclan el Español y el Hebreo en la colaboración con Idan Raichel, y también escuchar los pensamientos en voz alta de Aja Monet en una pista de Jazz.

Si me preguntaran que particularidad tiene el disco, qué diría? Pues que trata de tener un flow que creo que no siempre está logrado en la industria de la música en estos estilos cuando se llevan a un contexto Latino Americano. Y que no se puede encajar en un género específico. Además, está repleto de metáforas cuyo significado hay que descubrir poco a poco.

La cantautora cubana, Danay Suárez, fue galardonada este sábado pasado la Gaviota “De la Inspiración” por su participación en la Competencia Internacional de Viña 2017. Danay fue elegida representar a Cuba con su canción “Yo Aprendí” y el viernes pasado tomó la tarima y arriesgadamente interpretó la canción “Dejando al Mundo” sobre la música del tema “Yo Aprendí.” Esto marcó la primera vez que un artista cambia la letra de una canción desde que comenzó el festival en 1958.

Al terminar de interpretar el tema Danay le dijo a la audiencia, “Yo sé que yo acabo de perder la Gaviota pero para mí es importante salvar una vida hoy aquí.”

En principio esto resultó que la premiación se postergara para el sábado 25 ya que el hecho de cambiar la letra no coincidía con las reglas de la competencia marcando la primera vez que el departamento legal tuvo que ser consultado para determinar los resultados. Mario Domm, presidente del jurado de Viña 2017 e integrante del grupo Camila, validó la decisión de Suárez, a pesar que el Departamento Legal pidió analizar las bases del concurso. 'Cuando uno escribe una canción hay un apego por la letra. Uno siente que la letra será para siempre. Hoy acabamos de presenciar un acto muy atrevido, porque no solo cambió la letra, sino que la mejoró en un 100%', dijo el jurado. 'Si legal dice que no, Danay, yo te voy a regalar la Gaviota de Oro que gané con Camila,” agregó Mario Domm.

'Quise aprovechar la audiencia para entregar un mensaje más espiritual. Preferí arriesgar y dar un mensaje, antes de poner un adorno en mi casa.. preferí salvar, quizás con una palabra, porque en ese público hay de todo', explicó Danay sobre su decisión de cambiar la letra.

En fin, la decisión de Danay resultó en que fuera descalificada de la competencia, pero sin embargo y de igual forma fue galardonada la Gaviota “De la Inspiración” y un premio en efectivo. Según explicó Mario Domm, los jueces habían calificado a Suárez con la máxima nota, pero por las reglas del concurso no podían premiarla. Luego de llegar a un acuerdo con los organizadores del evento, concordaron que algunas reglas están 'para romperse' y decidieron acceder a Danay La “Gaviota de la inspiración', ya que consideraron que su modificación fue una jugada valiente y que en fin mejoró su actuación.

La Gaviota fue entrega a Danay por el director ejecutivo de Chilevisión, Jorge Carey, y la alcaldesa de Viña del Mar, Virginia Reginato Bozzo. Tras obtener el premio, la representante cubana decidió leer un mensaje de la biblia para el público de la Quinta Vergara. Danay hoy regresa a Cuba contenta con su Gaviota en mano y la oportunidad de haber tenido una plataforma para predicar un mensaje de inspiración.

Solo seis artistas fueron elegidos y de ganar la competencia ella viajará a Chile a interpretar la canción durante el festival en el legendario anfiteatro al aire libre de la Quinta Vergara de la ciudad de Viña del Mar (Chile).
El Festival Internacional de la Canción de Viña del Mar, tiene como objetivo principal el desarrollo y estímulo de la música popular de raíz internacional en Chile y el Mundo. A su vez, busca ser una plataforma de exhibición y reconocimiento para todo autor, compositor e intérprete emergente o conocido con un destacado trabajo en el ámbito musical.
De esta forma, el Festival de Viña 2017 es un certamen que busca reconocer la música internacional chilena e internacional, su trascendencia en el mundo, impulsando el desarrollo artístico de ésta a través del fomento del intercambio cultural entre los países participantes.
